As to why the translator worked, I will answer it since nobody has given a reasonable answer yet.



There are two likely situations as to why an electronic translator for Russian could translate your Ukrianian text:



1. You took text from a Ukrainian site, and assumed it was Ukrainian language. A vast majority of Ukrainian websites actually use Russian text, to make the site readable by all Ukrainians. The Russian language was, and still is in a great part of Ukraine, the only language people used. Speaking Ukrainian is done mostly in Northwest Ukraine only (Kyiv, Lviv, etc).



2. The text you used were sentences that used mainly Russian word. Although there are difference in words between the two, it is possible to get some sentences and structures that will translate properly regardless of if they are Ukrainian or Russian.



Look at the text to determine if it is really Ukrainian. If it is Ukrainian, it will have many words with a letter that looks like an English "i", with 2 dots over it instead of one. If not, it is more likely Russian.
There is some difference,but both languages from Slavic,so quite similar.I'm Russian speaking,but some words in Ukrainian a have to guess the meaning.
