I was planning on learning Japanese, Spanish, French, Russian, and German. Any suggestions, things to add, etc.?What languages should and aspiring translator learn?
I would personally like to learn Arabic and learn to read and write urdu since i can speak it, but my recommendation in the above bunch any day would be Spanish, simply coz its the most widely spoken lingo in south america and also in parts of europe and america :)
and their would be a need for translation much greater then any other lingo mentioned that would be specific to only france, germany, russia and a few other places
peace out
suggestion 1 learn some Esperanto first (like a few months), because it will make you learn the other ones faster
suggestion 2 do not take one language at the same time. Alternating them in your studies helps. Here in europe, learning 4 languages during the same 4-6 years is considered normal.
suggestion 3 study something else as well, specialise into a field or more. There's already plenty of people who can do *general* translations. What languages should and aspiring translator learn?
If you wish to learn all the languages you just listed that's ok. The thing is, you will get nowhere if you try to learn them all at once. Stick to one language at a time, like Spanish. Immerse in the language and practice it for a couple of years until you feel very comfortable using it. Then move on to the next language.
Some resources that might be of help to you would be:

For learning Spanish: http://www.spanish-only.com
I wish you success in your languages journey. And never forget to have fun! :D
Well those are quite interesting languages for any translator, but I would suggest that you learn the following languages since these are the ones used the most around the world:
Spanish, French, Arabic, and Chinese
Good luck! :)What languages should and aspiring translator learn?
All of those? You're quite the polyglot.
I'd recommend Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Farsi.
