How much could I make as a translator?
I would translate between English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Russian, and quite possibly Arabic by the time I have a Master's degree (though I do intend to get a PhD). No matter what, I would go into translation just because I love language, but, out of curiosity, how much could I make from it? On the level of working for myself? The US Government? If I was ever good enough, the UN?How much could I make as a translator?
Well the median salary for a translator in the USA is $44,790 per year. Kind of low for so many years of studying so you might want to consider another career like in the sales and marketing area, where all those language skills would come into use.
Anyways, it is your choice and you should do what you like the best.

The Russian people do a lot of business with China. Russians come to China to learn Chinese. I am at a University in China now and the Chinese language is being taught to Russian students as well as the Korean language and English language.The international business language is English...so the languages you would need if you were in Russia would have to be at least Russian and English. There are literally hundreds (if I remember right) of dialects of Russian in Russia if I remember right, so if you're planning on specializing in a region, it might be good to speak their exact language, not just Russian itself. While many are easily understood with Russian, a lot are very indeed different and unrelated to Russian itself at all, such as the Tatar language. The Russian people do a lot of business with China. Russians come to China to learn Chinese. I am at a University in China now and the Chinese language is being taught to Russian students as well as the Korean language and English language.The international business language is English...so the languages you would need if you were in Russia would have to be at least Russian and English. My guess would be Chinese for the next choice....so learning Mandarin would not be a waste.If I were a translator in Russia what languages would be good to know?

i have difficulty with russian to english and vise versa translators as well.
there is a major difference between the aplhabets, grammar, vowel and consonants, and pronunciations between russian and english, and many computer translators cannot be effectively programmed to calculate proper grammar etc. for different languages. there are similar problems with translators for all languages.

i have difficulty with russian to english and vise versa translators as well.
there is a major difference between the aplhabets, grammar, vowel and consonants, and pronunciations between russian and english, and many computer translators cannot be effectively programmed to calculate proper grammar etc. for different languages. there are similar problems with translators for all languages.

I have a project to study in to jobs around the world and I got a translator and the country is Russia. So I need to see what languages would be useful for a translator to know in russia. You should choose what you would love to do as a career. But since you posted your question here, here is my opinion:
Russian Translator:
Your ability is only limited to translating Russian so you don't have much job choice. I wouldn't suggest that major for you. You should choose a major that keeps your options open.
Criminal Justice:
This one gives a wider range of career options. You can choose to become a police officer, or, continue to further your education to become a judge after that, or you work for private companies in the legal department, etc. Basically, you will have a lot of options to get to from this major.
Hotel Management:
You don't really need a Hotel Management degree to work at a Hotel. Unless you are very ambitious and you can find a job at a Corporate office. Most people who work at a Hotel don't have a degree in the Hotel Management. I think Hotel Management is the most wasteful degree. If you think that working at a Hotel is glamorous then you are wrong. Plus, they don't pay much. Of course it depends on your job title, the size of the Hotel, the brand name of the Hotel, and the location of the Hotel. You will get a lot of pay if you can work your way into one of those big corporates that manage Hotels around the world. But remember, Hotel opens 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. That's what your work will be like if you work at the corporate office.
Most of all, choose what you think you would love to do as a career. But, remember that this is for the rest of your life. It sounds kind of depressing that you have to choose a major that define you for the rest of your life. But don't worry too much about it. Plenty of us get a major in one thing and work in a totally different industries. Why don't you postpone picking a major? In the mean time, get a few internship or try to work at some fields that you are interested in. That way you will get the first hand experience and then you can decide which major you will choose. Don't take too long to do that though. Take about a year or two but no more than that. In the mean time, keep going to school if not full time then part time. How can I work as a translator?
I am not thinking of working translator full time or opening a business. But I knew someone from an East Eropean country. Now in US. And she is able to make a bit of extra money by translating something (I think papers and stuff, she did that at home). Although I have no idea how. So how do I get into something like that. I am originally from Russia and lived there till I was 14, so I pretty much speak and write fluent Russian and English.How can I work as a translator?

Even something as simple as translating a children's story into Russian, or vice versa [e.g. a Pushkin tale like Tsar Sultan or something traditional like Baba Yaga, into English, or a Chekhov short story]. Yes, they've all been translated already, but a fresh version is always of interest.
Working from home, as I do, is ideal, because you can take on small jobs that fit your daily schedule, as well as long time-consuming ones.
It would also help if you had some qualification on paper so that when you advertise, you can point to your degree or diploma in Russian - that will give potential customers more confidence in you, that just saying "I pretty much speak/write fluent Russian".

2. Transliteration can be based on the rules of any European language using the Latin alphabet. There are differences in using Latin letters in each of them, and none of them may dictate the rules to others. ш = sh (English), sch (German), sj (Dutch)
3. None of the systems existing in European languages suits completely to Russian language. That's why Cyrillic alphabet was invented in the first place. Some people would pedantically transliterate Russian ш as "SH" while others use "W"
4. People make mistakes and misspellings in their own language. I see it translating here in Y!A all the time. I guess 95% of all my translations in Y!A was some grammatically incorrect badly spelled and transliterated in bizarre way Russian full of slang. Your text is the brightest example. You wrote 2 separate sentences as 1, made 2 words from 4 and misspelled everything besides the first word.
You need either to find a interpretor from flesh and blood or to post your texts in small portions in Y!A.

I'm a 22 year old fluent English speaker. Finished med school but do not want to pursue a career in medicine... will simply studying Japanese in Japan get me a job as a translator, or will I have to attend translators college for English and Russian as well? (because I plan on specializing in these 3 languages)

The ATA is the big one, but there are others. This is where your jobs will come from, for the most part. You can certainly get translation jobs without being certified, but it's required for certain legal documents and many businesses only hire certified translators as a matter of policy. Keep in mind as well that there are so many people in the US who speak both Japanese/Russian and English bilingually or natively due to speaking one at home and one at school/work that you'll be facing a lot of competition. It is not an easy way to make money.
