Translator as a career?

hey guys. im thinking about being a russian translator for the UN as a career, so i was just wondering if there were other translators out there that could tell me a little about it. like the salary, the benefits, stuff like that. it would be greatly appreciated. =)Translator as a career?
Translator or interpreter, or both? There is a difference. To work for the UN, you will need to be 100% bilingual and have an outstanding command of both languages (and should probably know at least one or two other languages). If you work for the UN, you will be very well paid and have excellent benefits. But you should know that relatively few translators are hired by companies and institutions; most make use of freelancers. In other words, you'd be self-employed. You can make good money and provide your own benefits if you are competent.
