Can I send an e-mail to a foreign country in their own language, using a language translator?

My girlfriend lives in Russia and she writes to me in English. But I think she cannot read English very well. I send her questions and she does always answer them. I would like to write her in Russian. However, when I translate my letter into that language, using a language translator and then send via Yahoo Mail it shows up as gobbly-****! Why is this??? How can I send my e-mails so she can read them in Russian with slavic characters? Can I send an e-mail to a foreign country in their own language, using a language translator?
