Do I need some kind of degree to get hired as a translator?

I am fluent in 3 languages English, Russian and Ukranian. I'm thinking to get a job as a translater in southern California or Chicago. Can some one please give me some information on that? (pay, demand, education...)Do I need some kind of degree to get hired as a translator?

It's one thing to be fluent but it's another thing to have it recognised and accreditated by the people who will endorse your employment. In Australia you have to have university standards to be registered as a translator and then sit another test for the translator registration. A friend who had studied French and completed an honours degree in the language couldn't pass the test to become a translator.

Try talking to Law enforcement agencies and other areas that would require a multilingual section. This would include export, hospital and airline. You may need a degree for these, check with them to find out
