As for the ??????s, that can only mean that the application you were using doesn't support Russian text. Look for a something on the appropriate web-site, or try an application that DOES support Russian text.



With the IM, it's more than likely that although it supports and shows Russian, it doesn't have any suitable software for actually translating it. Short of having a Russian in the room with you, try pasting the IM message into an online translation engine. I know they're rubbish, but it's got to be better than having no translation at all!
