My goal is to know 5 languages by the time I'm 25 (i've got 7 years to go) and I'm on my way to 3 already. I'm fluent in English and French (90%). And I've already begun Russian at a very quick pace. What should the other two be?To be an effective interpreter/translator, which languages should I have under my belt?
It really depends on what field you plan on going into. In my 20+ years in the U.S. Navy I picked up 6 languages [Japanese, Russian, Italian, Arabic, Swahili, French (which I added to my learning from high school but was only understood in Tunisia and Mauritius because the French were so arrogant if one didn't speak it fluently they could not understand you...or refused to),and I already knew Spanish and also some Finn (from my Finnish grandmother)] in which I could get something to eat, shop and carry on a limited conversation. I found out in Tunisia that I spoke French with such an Italian accent that I was thought to be Italian. Since then I've picked up some of 3 other languages (Turkish, Hindu and Cantonese), but unfortunately the languages I learned in the Navy have mostly been forgotten from non-use.
Mandarin, Arabic, Pharsi, Panjabi, Tamil, Urdu, Japanese, Spanish.
basically most spoken languages and Middle Eastern languages.
Competition is always tough for the major European languages, but there are increasing opportunities for interpreters with Eastern European languages and those spoken by minority ethnic groups, e.g. Urdu, PunjabiTo be an effective interpreter/translator, which languages should I have under my belt?
As a trilingual myself, I would suggest you also do some Italian and Spanish since knowing French will make it easear to learn these languages. You will be amazed to see that the more you know about 1 language, the more you understand other ones.
Of course you should do an Asian and Middle Eastern since they are, and will be in high demand for a long time to come.
