With a major in linguistics, can I get a job as a translator?

With minors in a few languages, what do you think?

I talked to my counselor and she said linguistics is the way to go, though I know she isn't an expert about languages.

Any advice? I'm in community college for the rest of this year and another year. Then I plan on transferring. In the mean time, this community college only has Spanish available for 4 semesters. The rest are only 1 semester, or Japanese 2 semesters. I personally wanted to become a translator for Russian especially. As well as become fluent in maybe 2 other languages. With a major in linguistics, can I get a job as a translator?
Looks like you are doing, what I did some years back... anyway,

majoring in linguistics, although will give you and advantage over other people, will not guarantee that you will be able to translate from any other language. In order to do that, you need to be fluent in the language you want to translate into or from.

My suggestion is to choose the language, you mentioned Russian, you want to work with and do all that is necessary to master it. Practice on your own, translating simple material from Russian to English until you feel comfortable. You may find it a little harder than you thought, but don't let that discourage you if that is what you want to pursue. Instead, further your education in the area. Some universities offer degrees in translation, you may want to investigate those. They are very helpful but only if you have a command of your target language. If you like Russian and your school doesn't offer it, try other venues. Take a class somewhere else if you have the time, or check with another college that may offer it and see if you can get credit for it at your school.

I wish you much success! With a major in linguistics, can I get a job as a translator?
What about being a Professor? You learn a lot more than just languages once you grasp a lot. My French professor for example knows more about wars/history/events/people than most people with Ph. D's do simply because she knows a lot about other cultures. With a major in linguistics, can I get a job as a translator?
You can apply at a law firm, you can work for the city translating in court, there is also jobs working for a consulate or simply offer services as freelance translator.
